All About Manipal in Karnataka (India) [Places to Visit & Where to Eat]

Travel - All about Manipal in Karnataka - India _ LifeThoughtsCamera

Planning your first trip to Manipal in Karnataka and feeling lost?. Here is a travel guide to help you plan for it all :). In this post, I am sharing all the spots that were actually shown to me by former Manipal students :D.

Manipal is a suburb within the city of Udupi District in the state of Karnataka (India). This suburb is also very popularly known as a Campus Town, the moment I landed in Manipal I understood why, the majority of the population is purely students, because of the all the big universities present here.

One of the interesting factors is you can view the Arabian Sea which is located to the west and the Western Ghats on the east side.

Long before this was once all barren hill with very few trees, the hill was transformed into a university town by visionary Dr. T. M. A. Pai, who first started the Kasturba Medical College in 1953, now a part of the Manipal University “MU”.

Access to and from the suburb is very easy as it very well developed, the nearest international airport is also around 50kms away which is Mangalore International Airport (formerly Bajpe Airport).

As for the language, Kannada is Karnataka states language and the local language here is Tulu. But as students from over 60 countries study here I feel that you will be able to converse with people in English in a manageable way.

Best Time To Visit Manipal

As it is a coastal area it is quite warm and humid throughout the year, I personally like the monsoon season. The down part to this is that you will not be able to enter the water in the beaches due to the strong currents and rains which will be on an off.

How To Reach Manipal

Manipal is very well connected by road, rail, and air.  Mangalore is the closest main city from Manipal which is about 65 km’s away.

By Road

As the roads are well connected you can choose your mode of transportation from car to buses that run frequently. For more information about bus routes and schedules do check out this website (http://www.ksrtc.in/oprs-web/), the link that I have shared is government operated, there are many others who provide bus service too. We traveled in a Zoom Car from Bengaluru city, Zoom is a company that rents out cars. You can also visit my Travel Diary post(coming up next) to view the route we took.

By Train

The closest railway stations are in Udupi which is about 2 km’s from Manipal and in the nearest main city Mangalore, which is about 65 km’s from Mangalore. For more information about train routes and schedules do check out this website (www.indianrail.gov.in)

By Flight

The nearest airport is Mangalore city, it is about 2 hours drive. You get domestic to International flights in Airlines such as Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, and Spice Jet. Facility of  Prepaid Taxis is available at the Mangalore Airport.

Vidyashakara Temple

Verdict

4 Stars

Vidyashankara Temple is a 14th-century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Sringeri, which is also written as Shringeri, it is a hill town. The temple architecture is an exhibition of the astronomical knowledge, it houses Twelve pillars which mark the 12 Zodiac Signs, and the rays of the sun fall on each of them in the order of the solar months. As it was raining heavily we did not venture in and moved on with our journey.

Don’t Leave Home Without

  • Medicine : Even though the area is well-developed chances of finding your brand might be lucky it is better that you carry your specific medications.

  • Be prepared for the winding roads, while ascending and descending the mountain. Getting a signal during this path will be hard.

  •  Rain gear (umbrella/raincoat), umbrella definitely does not work in the beach area as it is very windy.

Are some of the things you might definitely need.
